With the end of another earnings season in sight, Wall Street's attention has turned to Washington and the debt ceiling deadline. Republican negotiators on Friday walked out of talks on raising the debt limit , abruptly ending a positive week of discussions that appeared to be leading toward a deal. Democrats and the White House have been pushing for a "clean" hike to the debt limit that would push the next deadline past the 2024 presidential election, while Republicans are pressing for spending cuts. Many investors believe this ongoing game of chicken over the debt limit is largely for show, since the U.S. has never defaulted on its debt obligations. Bed Bath & Beyond filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday after failing to raise enough money to stay in business. The company is asking a New Jersey bankruptcy court permission to auction its namesake and Buy Buy Baby brands. "Comments from BBBY suggest that if a buyer of the company does not emerge, management plans to gradually wind down operations. The company currently operates 360 namesake locations and 120 Buy Buy Baby stores. "We are hard-pressed to envision Wayfair shares moving appreciably higher until the company's business model showcases improved, broad-based fundamental momentum.
Expect more downside ahead for Williams-Sonoma 's stock as demand for home furnishings weakens in a difficult macro environment, according to Morgan Stanley. Analyst Simeon Gutman downgraded the stock to underweight from equal weight, saying in a note to clients Monday. The analyst also slashed his price target on the stock to $100 from $150. Going forward, Gutman views a slew of macro-related issues for Williams-Sonoma, expecting home furnishings to decline by 6% to 7%, discretionary spending to fall and deflation to return in 2023. "Though WSM's higher-income customer provides some insulation, in aggregate we think these headwinds mean the category likely declines and comps should turn more sharply negative in '23," he said.
